I think this book is best read aloud to young children at bedtime in order to catch the magic of it.

Nostalgia is winning out a bit, I'll admit.

The storytelling is very much geared towards a younger target audience, for sure, but that writing has created yet another lovely narration style (a storyteller breaking the fourth wall to comment on why parts are to be skipped, for example) and charmed me the whole time I read. It even made laugh quite often.

Edmund hits differently reading this time, so I enjoyed that discovery, too. Now that I am reading the whole series more closely together this time, his arc feels more intentional and thoughtful (though simple, too). Also, speaking from a Christian lens, I've lived a life where the secret conversation between Aslan and Edmund feels more... relatable. Powerful theology is hidden in this story, in that regards.

Lastly, what I found interesting too is that... I think the movie adaptation is just as good if not better than this book, but not in a way that demeans this book by any means. The target audience for this book dummied down the emotional stakes of some plot points that the movie adaptation chose to linger on more intentionally. I should recant and say not that one is better than the other but more that each told the same story with different executions, executing the story excellently. It is a relationship I want to look at more closely.

This is an excellent children's book that still hits close and speaks to me as an adult. I cannot wait to be able to read this to my own children some day.

I first read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as a child, but I never finished the series. So, I decided to remedy that by listening to it all on audiobook this year (in published order) starting with a revisit to the first book. Surprisingly, I remembered the majority of the story. A little fuzzy on some of the details, but the major points have become a permanent part of my memory.

Looking forward to continuing the journey this time.

“Once a King in Narnia, always a King in Narnia. But don't go trying to use the same route twice. Indeed, don't try to get there at all. It'll happen when you're not looking for it. And don't talk too much about it even among yourselves. And don't mention it to anyone else unless you find that they've had adventures of the same sort themselves. What's that? How will you know? Oh, you'll know all right. Odd things, they say-even their looks-will let the secret out. Keep your eyes open."
