I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I hadn’t seen the movie 5+ times.

*Tears hair out* Aggggh the book ripped my heart out ALL OVER AGAIN.
Definitely recommend. Really adds more depth to the movies and the characters.

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this book. I haven't seen Rogue One, so I really can't do a comparison between book and movie. I do realize that you get much more of an insight into a character's thoughts in a book, which is more difficult to portray in a film. However, there was way too much telling instead of showing, because the book assumes that you've seen the movie and have it running through your head as you're reading it, I'm guessing. That being said, I felt like I came away with a good understanding about the thoughts and emotions of each individual character than I would have if I had seen the movie first. The writing was fairly average and boring, which was the biggest disappointment for me, as I had heard good things about the author and this book in particular. I'm thinking Rogue One is definitely better viewed than read. Freed tries his best to narrate the battle sequences and expand on characters' thoughts, but it became rather droll and repetitive unfortunately.
Excellent novelization of the movie script. I loved reading the "extra" scenes depicting small moments and conversations between characters that were cut from the film; it helped give them more dimension. I also love reading about characters because you get some of their thoughts and feelings that aren't necessarily imparted on the screen, so I could get more into the character of Jyn Erso. Another little bonus is the interstitial bits--between chapters, there are Imperial and Rebel Alliance "memos" and even some journal entries from Mon Mothma, that also added to the story.
I read half. It was well-written (probably one of the best movie novelizations I've read), but I've seen the movie a few times and didn't really have the interest to read it anymore.
If you liked/loved the film as much as I did, this book is pretty much a must read, I think. It adds to the film and will make the ending even more impactful because you grow to love the characters even more. The last few chapters, Chapter 20 in particular, pack an emotional punch.
Star Wars novels are obviously not literary masterpieces, but I have always enjoyed them regardless, but this one felt more rounded, more engaging and perhaps it was because the film was fresh, and the characters had hit a spot, but the book helped me rekindle my love for the genre and I definitely plan on reading more of the books from this universe again.

The pain became more painful. I adore Freed's work with Rogue One, and I loved getting a closer look into the minds of some of my favorite Star Wars characters during such pivotal times in SW history. This book had so many moments that brought tears to my eyes. Well done.
⭐️ 4.25/5
I’ve never read a novelisation like this before so going in I was skeptical that I would only like this book because I liked the movie. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
While sticking close to the film the book fleshes out the characters more subtlety. There are no huge paragraphs giving you character motivation but just a couple of extra lines here and there that perfectly allow for you to get a better understanding of the character.
Another thing I noticed and again I don’t know if this is because it’s the first time reading a novelisation is the speed of the action. It matches the film almost exactly which allowed for such an easy read
If you enjoyed Rogue One like I did then you are sure to like this book as well. While it’s not a 5* masterpiece it doesn’t have to be for it to work.
