There were parts that were rewritten in the movie that were better than the book

Freed elevates a story I'm already in love with. The bits of supplemental data flesh out the story in a fun way, as well. Getting into some of the characters heads also held pleasant surprises. Jonathon Davis performed the audiobook and he's exactly who I would have picked.

No one cares but did I collect canonical evidence for a romantic relationship between Jyn and Cassian? Yes I did. I have receipts, Disney.

I did not think this was going to be my first read of 2021, but hey here it is.

I had this on my TBR last year but didn't manage to quite finish it.

Rogue One is my second least favourite, or maybe third least favourite, Star Wars movie (with Solo & The Rise of Skywalker being down below it / equal). I think I just never really loved any of the characters enough except Cassian.

Overall though, this has made me want to re-watch the movie so hopefully I can do that in the near future!

I loved Rogue One the movie, but LOVED the book adaptation even better. This book included additional content that wasn't in the movie; it elaborated on each characters' thoughts, feelings, and motivations. So what stopped me from giving this book a 5-star rating? Spelling errors; although they were few, they were still annoying.

SPOILERS FOR ROGUE ONE AHEAD.

Non-spoiler review:

The book was well-written but didn't excite me. Film knowledge hampered my enjoyment and I kept trailing away from it. It's not a bad book, it's just... uninspired.

SPOILER REVIEW:

It has taken me one year and one week to finish this damned book and BOY DO I FEEL GREAT ABOUT TICKING THIS ONE OFF.

I watched the film first. I knew what was going to happen. The problem: I was underwhelmed by Rogue One, the film. I won't lie, I watched the Film Theory episode about Rogue One and the Knights of Ren and that was a big influence on me, cos I really wanted that to be a thing. It was a more interesting story than "We had a plot hole, we decided to fix the plot hole, which made ANOTHER plot hole, so to fix that plot hole we killed everyone".

It was bittersweet reading this knowing what would happen, especially as the book gives more insight into the characters, their thoughts and feelings. The book humanises the Rogue One team more than the movie did, so that made it hurt more when they died instead of feeling underwhelmed. But I kept tapering away from it because I just... didn't care.
