I have somewhat mixed feelings about this. I've always been partial to books over movies as you get so much more of an insight into a character's thoughts - something that is so difficult to portray in a film. As much was true for this book - I felt like I understood more about the thoughts and emotions of each individual character than I did in the movie (particularly with Jyn, Bodhi and Baze Malbus). The writing was fairly average, which was the biggest disappointment for me. However, it was good (and heartbreaking) to re-live the story all over again, so on the whole, it was an enjoyable read.
When I watched Rogue One in cinemas, I remember thinking that because it didn't have Jedi, it was just another action film but by the end, I realised how wrong I had been and just how much it would grow to be one of my favourite movies.
Jyn has to be one of my top two favourite book characters and everything about her character has made her one I won't forget. She has a strength in her that I wish I could have and her character is inspiring to many including me. She was as beautiful and brave in the book saw she was the movie and I was enticed into each page with every word I read.
I understood the book would be an almost exact of the movie and there were a few things that did not appear in the film but overall, I found the book to be enjoyable, a page turner for any Star Wars lover and a reminder of the strength each of us ha. We just have to dig down and find it.

I wrote most of my points as I was updating my progress. To sum it up I think the action and POV was handled great. Nothing was missed and the timing felt perfect to show the order of events.
I liked the additional material, like Galen arguing with the diagnostics team that the exhaust had to go there and all the radiation would be fine. There were bits like that that gave some lightness to the harsh story.
As bleak as it is

I really enjoyed the added thoughts of each of the main characters as they died. Cassian didn't get his, but all in all I thought it gave great insight into the characters and was well written.

Once again, the book is better than the movie, although in this case it's pretty close. The book does give you some insights into the characters that you will never get from the movie. During K2SO's final 12 seconds, he runs through all sorts of scenarios. That scene in itself is worth reading the book.
There are also a series of messages between Galen and the chief engineer on the Death Star which take place 18 months before the events of Rogue One. In this, we see how he manages to get his vulnerability installed into the space station. Brilliant!
Even though the difference between Rogue One (the book and the movie) is not as big as the difference between The Force Awakens, I highly recommend the book.

My dad got this for me randomly as a Christmas present. I don’t read movie novelizations, like at all. However, this was Star Wars, so it was a totally different ball game than junior novelizations for kids.
I really loved how we really really got into the character’s heads. We see so many more facets of their personalities and their thinking processes. We really dig deep into their brains to see how they feel. It’s no longer just a screen with one perspective. There are now more ways to see it than just one. It’s not just Jyn, but it’s also Cassian, Saw, Chirrut, Baze, and the whole rest of the gang.
This book is surprisingly interesting to read and really makes you relive the cinematic experience.

It was nice to get into the heads of all the characters. I enjoyed what Cassian thought at the beginning, and watch Jyn grow with emotions and words instead of the screen. And the detail was a nice addition to a film I already love.
Even though I knew their death was coming, I still cried when it happened.

This book is a great addition to the movie, it delves more into the character's background and inner thoughts making their actions more meaningful. The author does a good job of adapting the movie and incorporating the viewers impressions into this book, which, like with many adaptations, will be a better read if you have already seen the movie. Jyn's thoughts on her time with Saw and her skills,, Cassian's internal conflicts, Bodhi's motivation, and the feelings between Chirrut and Baze were all more explained than the movie was able to do and along with the "supplemental files" between chapters made this book an enjoyable addition to the movie and made it one of the better movie adaptations.
This is the first film novelisation I've read, or at least the first Star Wars one, and it definitely won't be the last. I loved the film Rogue One and this was a perfect companion novel to it, still including the main scenes of the film but expanding on the motivations of the characters, their backstories and why they do certain things. This time we see exactly why Jyn is so reluctant to help the rebellion and why Cassian decided to go against everything he had learned and help the daughter of Galen Erso. The POVs switch between all six of the main characters, including the villian, so we can see far more of how their paths lead to where they are in the book.
I'm so glad I got this book out of the library and I would definitely recommend it! 4.5 stars!
