A very middle-of-the-road adaptation.
‘jyn felt small. she was four years old again, and her mother was so much bigger than her. lyra whispered in her ear, so soft jyn had to strain to hear it: “the strongest stars have hearts of kyber”’
So,
I’ve been thinking how to word this review and I keep on coming up short. Alexander freed writes Star Wars how I wish Star Wars was written, he has such a power with words, he cradles these characters in his hands and treats them with such care and delicacy that with every line my heart breaks. i should have known that this would be a deeply emotional book, but god dammit I didn’t think I’d be holding back tears on the tube during rush hour !!
oh my gosh. I felt this one.
whenever I say ‘oh I’m reading a star wars book’ I always make fun of myself for it, so the person I’m speaking to knows that I know that it’s funny, maybe childish or trash lit and you know maybe it is, but god dammit if I don’t love these characters with every fibre of my being.
once I’m done with my book buying ban you best believe I’m gonna buy every single alexander freed sw book hes ever written. thank you and good night !!!

Ow my feelings! I knew it was coming, and I still insisted on reading the book. I really enjoyed seeing into the characters perspectives and their reasoning behind their actions.
This finished a lot quicker than I thought it was going too. A very quick story of how the Death Star plans fell into the hands of the rebels. I wish it was a little longer and gave a little more description of the story line but it was still enjoyable and gave you a little bit of knowledge. The illustrations were decent enough as well.
I'm tempted to tag this as fantasy just on principle...
The thing about Rogue One the movie is that, while I enjoyed it tremendously, it did its characters a disservice. There were so many interesting figures at the heart of the rebellion and the movie just didn't spend enough time on their back stories and motivations and self-hood. The book fixes some of that, although it's the novelization of the movie and isn't allowed to do things like change dialogue and scenes to better fit its new medium. For example, K-2S0 is just not as funny without Tudyk's performance. Bohdi Rook gets the best treatment while, Jyn feels like Freed is trying to write a different character than Felicity Jones played. Everyone else lands somewhere in between. I'm glad I read it, but it wasn't quite what I wanted it to be.

I LOVED THE MOVIE. And just as I suspected, the book is just as heartbreaking and awesome.
"Do you think," he'd asked, "anybody's listening?"
He hadn't been able to raise an arm, to point skyward after her transmission, but she'd seemed to understand.
"I do," she'd said, soft and—to his ears—earnest. "Someone's out there."

In my opinion, this is a must-read for Star Wars canon. It easily ranks in my top 3 fave canon novels. It's such a solid book, and it adds a lot of insight into the movie, making me even more excited to see it again.
I was getting impatient to see the movie again when it comes out on DVD. And reading the novelization was just the cure. So good.
