A well-written look at the character of Joker as played by the late Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

This is by far the best i have read.
The graphic is breathtaking, everything about this is perfect.
Reading about clown prince of crime starting over and terrifying even the baddest of bad from a view of jokers sub-ordinate gives you a glimpse of how bloodcurdling it is.
PROPERLY DARK,PROPERLY PSYCH!!!

Without even looking at the publishing date, it's obvious this was made around the time The Dark Knight movie was released. The story, characters, artwork, and tone are all a product of its time and work together to create a cohesive comic. The art is technically sound, and has some detailed and beautiful panels displaying the characters and Gotham with an unending gloom that is typical of the city. (Personally I love the black and white artwork originals shown at the end of the Deluxe Edition more than the final product, something about it just hits harder). Joker is violent and greasy; watching his cruelty unfold through the eyes of a average henchman, Johnny, is an interesting and fun way for the story to unfold. Outsider POV being big fun.
That being said, even as someone who can enjoy the Dark Knight's Joker, this one felt... different? An every day mob boss in white face paint. His worst deeds are committed because the story needs to give the audience a shock. In a time when there are so many well executed versions of the Joker, this one fails to impress. And he needed to impress when the whole story is centered around the Joker and Johnny.
It strongly embodies the grimdark masking as realism of the time. Not a story for me, even with all the talent behind it.
Graphic: Gun violence, Violence, Blood, Murder
Moderate: Drug use, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Addiction, Rape, Sexual assault

The Joker is released from Arkum. But he has nothing. This won't stop him from attempting to get back what he feels is his by right. The soul of Gotham. This is a close-up look at naked ambition. And the line between a virtue that drives us to greatness, or pushes us to psychotic missteps. Dark. Introspective. Brooding. Right at the intersection of sanity and insanity. Just where I like my Joker stories. Brian Azzarello (author of the exceptional 100 Bullets) does not disappoint. Great art by Lee Bermejo.

Dark, gritty, a good look at what it would be like to be a member of Joker's crew - bizarre, randomly violent behavior mixed with power and some fun times. I honestly don't really understand what happens in this book (and why) and can't tell if that's intentional.
Bermejo's art on this one is fresh and glorious. It's a style I haven't quite seen from him before, and it's pro beyond pro (and I get a couple of those boot shots I love so much).
The story is told through a henchman's POV, as it should be - Azzarello's right that we don't want to decode Joker's head - but the flow didn't work for me consistently. I wasn't buying Jonny's eloquence. But his persona was excellent. And his slow but inevitable understanding that he was nothing more than a brave pawn was beautifully done.
