Still racist. Structure is breaking down. Getting more and more mired in details, then skipping what I considered to be major parts that were built up to.
The story continues. Edging up to the Revolutionary War one learns what the early settlers life was like in the back country. The story is engaging and the characters richly painted. Something interesting is always going on.

It has to be said that the beginning of Diana Galbadron’s sixth Outlander novel starts much stronger than The Fiery Cross. The difference is stark between the two books. In A Breath of Snow and Ashes, there’s never a dull moment, which can be sometimes to it’s detriment, but sometimes not. For a book this large, the action helps keeps the reader going, although, at times, I felt that for the amount of things that go wrong for the Fraser family, they must be one of the most unfortunate families in the Carolinas!
The family lurches from one problem to the next, with never a dull moment in between. However, the fallout of each incident is never glossed over, and one incident concerning Claire doesn’t shy away from the effects of the psyche, or the trauma that comes from such incidents.
I enjoyed the different POVs of the book, each feels like they have their own unique voice. I especially enjoyed Ian’s, as while I do love his character, I’ve often felt like I don’t understand his motivations, or could predict how he would react in particular scenes. The insight into his thoughts changed this, and really helped me understand Ian on a deeper level.
As the books edge closer and closer to the War of Independence, the tensions between warring factions, of revolutionaries and king’s men, and even between the Scottish diaspora really helped build the tension towards what, we the reader, know as inevitable. You can almost see the lines being drawn between communities, between family and friends. Galbadron has always done this well, the mingling of story vs historical fact. She never weighs the story down with too much adherence to history, but enough to effect the course of the story and the characters.

This audiobook was 57 hours and 46 minutes - and yet I was sorry to see it end. Absolutely loved it, and love the series!
Really enjoyed the last 20% of the book, so I almost rated it higher, but the beginning was so slow and drawn out. I put the book down and read a whole bunch of other books before coming back to it. Despite this, I'm totally hooked now and I MUST find out what happens next!
