I never actually watched any of the E series, but I knew about them and Playboy, so I've known who she is for a long time. I watched a newer docuseries "Sectets of Playboy," and I found Holly likeable and wanted to know more of her story. I think the book is easy to follow and it's an interesting look at that world.
Graphic: Body shaming, Bullying, Emotional abuse, Toxic relationship, Toxic friendship
Moderate: Cursing, Misogyny, Sexism, Sexual assault, Sexual content, Alcohol, Sexual harassment
Minor: Death, Drug use, Sexual assault, Suicidal thoughts, Pregnancy
Thank you to Harper Collins and Goodreads for sending me a finished copy of this book for free!
They must have known I was a big fan of Holly when she was on the E! reality show The Girls Next Door as Hef's main girlfriend. She seemed classy, and I liked her classic fashion style, and now I think she's proven that she's smart, talented, and has a good work ethic. Sadly, Hef used to keep her from her potential (she reveals that he was controlling and jealous); and she says they never once had a meaningful conversation.
She's accomplished so much since she's gotten out from under him. This memoir shows her slow metamorphosis from a meek, submissive girlfriend to a woman in charge of her own destiny; but is mainly about her time at the mansion--7 years! The other girls (before Bridget and Kendra, her reality co-stars) were mean to her, so she stayed by Hef's side. It was only for the reality series that he started to allow her to pursue some creative outlets. I loved it!

the best part of the book was reading the chapters about her time on Girls Next Door and watching along with her to see the contrast
3.5 stars. This proves that underneath the surface there’s always another deeper darker layer that is hidden beneath the glitz and glamour. It’s actually a sad portrayal that money and fame is not always the ticket to a fulfilling life or will gain you instant happiness. There’s always a price.
The book doesn’t always depict the playboy lothario in the nicest kindest light but Holly manages to still keep a decent amount of respect while simultaneously cutting down the illusion. In honesty I wasn’t expecting much from this book but it was unexpectedly interesting and by the end of the book I was encouraged by her outlook on life and how she managed to weather the almost daily negativity of living in the playboy house and then turning it into a positive outcome and actually making a success for herself outside of the playboy house walls.
In light of all the recent publicity due to Hugh Hefner’s death at the age of 91 this was an eye opening account of the real behind the scenes going ons, the manipulation, the strange bedroom arrangements and how much is fabricated for publicity and for the cameras!

Like millions of people, I was a fan of the Girls Next Door. I own the DVDs and find myself rewatching them from time to time (including the disastrous sixth season, but that is neither here nor there). And like millions, I was tricked into believing everything Holly, Bridget, and Kendra went through on the show was not an act.
