Overall, this is a pretty damn good start to this Clementine trilogy. I’m a huge fan of Telltale’s The Walking Dead games, so getting to spend more time with Clementine will always be a delight.
The new characters are interesting, and, in keeping with TWD fashion, don’t get too attached to them. (Also, there’re some queers in this here book, which we love.)
I think my main issue with this graphic novel is one that I find myself experiencing in most that I read: I just wish it would take its time and SLOW DOWN. There’s so much here that feels really glossed over, most frustrating of all: character relationships and motivations. Things just felt extremely choppy in this book, which is just a hard thing for me gel with. If this were given enough time (i.e. more pages), this could really be an immense stand-out in the TWD universe. But as is, it’s merely just an interesting start to a trilogy that I hope learns to slow things down and let Tillie Walden tell her beautiful, queer stories.
(Also, almost every action scene was like super confusing. Like it was hard to tell who did what to who or what. And no I don’t mean the scene that’s very much intentionally disorienting.)
