A great thriller for those with Southern black experience (and, of course, for anyone else who'd like to read about them). This book was both hard to read and difficult to put down.

It follows a Titus, the first black sheriff in his Southern town, as he tries to take down a serial killer who
has gone under the radar by targeting black children.
Not only is it a great mystery thriller, but it does a great job touching on thoughts related to race, religion, crime, and policing. I imagine a particular type of reader will not enjoy or even be able to entertain this type of novel, but the unfortunate thing is that many parts of this story are reflective of the current American reality.

The parts of this story that I loved were the cultural commentary, particularly
the tensions between Titus, who wants to make change through the police system, and the more progressive, young church leader and members.

The only parts of this story that I was not the hugest fan of, were the characters foils between Titus's romantic interests and, to some degree, the cultural commentary. I think for some people, reading Titus's thoughts may feel like they're hearing new ideas for the first time and may not be able to appropriately cpntextualize some of the events in the story without them. For me, personally, I got what he was saying early on and didn't need the explicit reminders. I could have benefited from less telling and more showing, but I understand that isn't the case for other readers. Also, again, this book is very graphic, hard to read, and brings up reminders of some of the most difficult occurrences in American life.

It got gritty as soon as Chapter 2—not even 15 pages in. There were stomach-turning moments, but it read like a movie. Titus was complicated but appeared cooler than the other side of a pillow as he navigated the chaos, racists, his personal life, and doubts that he was no longer Black since he turned blue. You have to be in the right headspace to read this, but it’s brilliant.

The way the characters are written is something I admire. I want to write like this. But I wont rate it any higher because…well, look at the content warnings. I should’ve known before diving in. Still an incredibly well-written book…or maybe I’m “booked-starved” and I’m reading this at the very beginning of my vacation

Another gripping crime story from SA Cosby, quickly becoming one of my favorite crime/thriller writers. This is a riveting story about how the increasing divisiveness of our communities allows monsters to hide among us.

I never wanted to put this book down from the first page. It was like watching a secret season of True Detective…but in words. Not only was it ridiculously engaging, but it also has A LOT to say about the systemic racism in this country - especially in the south. I loved the main character so much. I really, really rooted for him. Cosby is an author who definitely has something to say, and I will buy every book he writes to keep supporting him. I highly recommend this book. It’s got a little bit of…everything.
