if i could give this book 4.5 stars i would, but not quite 5. i really enjoyed the big plot twist and i am glad it came when it did because i was starting to get bored. this book also made me realize the severity of the pandemic and what it must have been like for the people who worked in the hospitals and for anyone really, who worked with covid patients.

I didn’t know if I would be ready to read a book about Covid in 2025, it still feels so soon. In my mind the past 5 years has been one long continuation of the same long, strange year.
I should have expected to scream JODI WHAT THE HELL at some point during this book but I was absolutely not ready for it when the twist came, and I certainly did yell at Jodi while doing my makeup and listening to this audiobook. This book was a journey and I loved so much of it, even the hard parts. It reminded me of the pain and fear that I and so many in my life felt so deeply in 2020, but it was somehow weirdly refreshing to journey through this story while confronting those latent, hidden feelings.

Was on track to be a 5-star read until the very inaccurate portrayal of speech pathology. Also noted several discrepancies -- for example, main character would describe how difficult it was to tell if people were smiling beneath their masks, but then stated someone had a "cute tooth gap" between their front teeth when they smiled.
