This is a really great book. I learned a lot about the exploitation of Black people in Brazil. The book also covered the spiritual traditions of Black people in Brazil, and that was fascinating.

There is a lot of blood in the first scene where
one kid cuts her tongue and another kid slices her tongue off altogether.
I found it hard to get through that part, but I'm glad I kept going.

I really loved the scenes showing JarĂȘ, one of the spiritual practices of Black people in Brazil.

This book is amazing! It'd been a while since a story actually warmed my heart like this one did. It's about faith, family, comunity, relationships to the earth, and so so so much more. It reminded of my grandmother, her daughters and their journey through life. It's just beautiful. Everyone should read this!
