This book was darker and creepier than I expected, but a suspenseful ride!

i don't know what possessed her to write this book. but it was, for the most part, very well written (v deep & dark for a YA book).

A bit predictable and juvenile at times, but honestly, it's YA I get it. The last 25% was a bit rushed honestly, and it infuriated me that Elliot and Tess didn't seem to realize what was going on. And it was also infuriating that they spent half of the book not knowing how to communicate with each other. The plot was interesting with a bit of Dark Academia vibe to it. Overall it's not a bad book, but it's not something special

"It was terror of the unknown, of the unknowable, and the realization that maybe, there actually was something there in the dark."

ADVERTENCIA (TW): Escenas de autolesiones, abuso a menores, padres enfermos.
*Sangre.

"From the library of those below."

"He was aiming for Mr. Darcy and made himself into a Collins instead."

"Ask me to stay. Ask me to skip. I'll do it. We can sit in this courtyard for the rest of the day, the rest of the night, forever."

"'Only in the agony of parting do we look into the dephts of love.'"

"'Tess, you beautiful creature, what took you so long?'"

Gaaaaah!!! I realllly enjoyed this book.

Like I literally read it in 1 day, could not put it down. The short chapters kept the pace going and the characters were fun to read from. It does take a little bit of time until things properly kick off, but when it does... OMG!!

What I also liked, was that it was a proper dark story, with real consequences for the characters - a beautiful mix of horror and thriller set against the backdrop opf a college library, full of dark, sorrowful things and... magic. And there's evil.

Tess and Eliot were perfectly imperfect as characters and workedso well together. So glad I read this!

This book was so good! This is one of those YA books that don’t feel YA. I had such a good time reading this. The main characters were honestly amazing. The girl was such a typical black cat older sister and the guy was such a NICE GUY. Ugh I love the combination. Such. A. Good. Read!

I usually can’t stand YA anymore, but the way this was told was, for the most part, brilliant PLUS the story was engaging. I’m pleased Tori’s short story in the Dark Academia anthology led me to her backlist. I can’t wait to get into more.
One of the main reasons this couldn’t get 4 stars was because the hardships that Tess was purportedly facing were not even in the ballpark of what Elliot was going through, but somehow we had to pretend like these were equally engaging tragic backstories. Like Tess took it upon herself to parent her sister, for… reasons? Even though her reportedly “childish” parents kind of came across as being nothing of the sort? I really can’t take YA 100% seriously anymore because these are not the problems a 16 year old is facing, I’m sorry.
