I think a lot of people go into this book with wishful thinking. I really like Carrie Fisher most of the time. This is not a pleasant book to read but I don’t think that was the message she was trying to accomplish. This book is all over the place and lacks cohesiveness. It is full of over-the-too, mostly cynical sarcasm. It is not a feel-good book. And, it’s not supposed to be. Fisher was trying to share a glimpse into her life as an addict and the discovery that she was bipolar. It’s not dark, just not pleasant. The writing lacks clarity. But anyone who has lived with someone or as someone with bipolar disorder can probably relate to her story. I give it two stars because I think it lacks the clarity and relatable ness it needs for a true understanding, which is what I’m always looking for in a memoir or autobiography.

still can’t believe she’s gone. we really lost her way too soon. 💔
this short memoir/transcript of her one woman show was hilarious. if you’re looking at reviews wondering if you should read this, my answer is yes but pick up the audiobook. hearing carrie read it herself i feel definitely improved my experience and it was a fun time overall.

It's still so unbelievable to me that we lost Carrie Fisher, but her humor and insight will stick with me forever. This was great on audio since it's narrated by her. One of the shortest audiobooks I've listened to (a little under 3 hours) but it's amusing, informative, harrowing and honest all at once. I appreciate her frankness when speaking about mental illness and addiction and also her willingness to find the irony and humor in the things she went through in her life.

I was hoping this would get me out of a reading slump and guess what? It did!!
Who knew Carrie Fisher was so funny and had such a vivid and wild personality. I've only seen her in Star Wars and never knew she wrote, but this has been a surprisingly fun (surprisingly because she's talking about her addictions and the not so fun parts of life).
Like she said "I have to start by telling you that my entire existence could be summed up in one phrase. And that is: If my life wasn’t funny it would just be true, and that is unacceptable."

"Wishful Drinking" is a messy, thoughtful, chaotic, and absolutely brutally candid reflection on a life spent in the public eye. Carrie Fisher does not shy away from sharing her truth, for better or for worse.
