Unfortunately, this was not for me. I sat and thought about this for a while. I know this book tends to be s very loved one for many people, including my mutuals but unfortunately I had a lack of connection with it.

Follows a few women living in a hotel as their experience the world around them. I only cared about one character and couldn't wait to get through the other chapters so I could read about her again. I was beyond bored with the other women and couldn't really care for them. I believe the writing also tended to use loads of repetition when explaining the same things such as beauty standards in Korea.

Definitely a book to discuss at book club! Set in Korea and following the tale of different women, I could certainly see myself or other female friends in each of the characters. No matter the country, I feel like this story represents and shares the pain in living or choosing to not live up the the beauty standards that society places on us.

Loved this book. 4.5/5 stars.

Both fascinating and at times shocking (horrifying?), this was a deeply interesting look at Korean womanhood today. I have a limited understanding of this culture, and this book examines the complicated friendships, social hierarchies, cultural norms, and family life of five 20- and 30-something women in Seoul. The writing is beautiful and I stopped numerous times to consult Google on topics/phrases/types of food mentioned, which I could’ve just skimmed past, but taking the time to slow down really enriched the reading experience.

Read on the recommendation of the Bad on Paper podcast - it’s the Feb 2021 book club pick.

a scathing critique of contemporary South Korean culture. An interlocking story told from the point of view of 4

This was just a perfect read for me. It was not mind-blowing, but I just really enjoyed the experience. I did not want to finish it, honestly.
