At times relatable to the point of concern. Not all the time, thankfully.

I found this book deeply uncomfortable to read, but probably in a good way?

Wow. Just wow. This is easily one of my favourite books. I’m obsessed with the writing style, and that the only dialogue we get from Sophie is via her messages. It’s a book about living and graduating through the pandemic without actually being about the pandemic. Although I have to admit, it took me a while to get through it because I found it really emotionally tiring to read. I’ve never related to a character as much as I relate to Sophie, the words are weighing heavy on me as I see my own thoughts and feelings on the pages in front of me. The plot is fantastic, the events are heartbreaking and I literally cried in the airport at this book. I physically can’t put into words how much I loved this book and everything it represents.

You could tell it was a debut novel.
The main character was whining all the time. Like all the time.
Some of the things she went through was fair that you could be sad about, but she would cut everyone out of her life and begin to hate on everybody. I hated the main character so much throughout the whole book. And she was so problematic.
When her sister kept “teasing” her about her weight, I didn't really see it. Like of course I could understand why you would get irritated, but this girl was so mad at her sister for those comments. Like she literally slept with Finn to make herself feel like she was better than her sister. Her parents though- they were horrible parents (and the sister later on ofc).

And also: why why why were the crack there. It had no reason to be there, and the plot would have carried out fine without it.
And honestly just don’t bring social media into books.
BUT I will say the writing style was okay, and there were many times where there were quote potential (it was ruined most of the times because it was “whining over nothing” quotes.)

ok so i thought this was interesting as i was reading it but then it just ended up feeling unfinished? like some parts felt really relatable and there was potential for this to be good but then it kinda never went anywhere and was too much of the same things over and over. still didn't dislike it but i had higher expectations

Notes:
- Really don't know what to make of this one; it seemed like a portrayal of the way our generation lives their lives in response to an uncertain world but without much insight and a very unpleasant main narrative voice.
- I appreciate that some characters aren't meant to be likeable but this protagonist and her toxic relationships (of all kinds!) just felt immature, like they were late teens instead of 22.
- Not a huge fan of the "crack in the sky" plot idk it felt too much like it was meant to mirror the covid pandemic but I don't feel like it added much to the exploration of character stories.
- Rating not reflective of overall quality of book (~3.0-3.5?) but just my own feelings towards it: not the book for me. Really didn't like reading this voice and a few names/plot points hit a little too close to my personal history whoops—
