I upped it one star from my 2018 reading. I really just didn't like any of the adjunct characters and wasn't the least bit interested in the fair.

Another stellar and solid entry in the Cadfael series. I will never stop being impressed by Peters' ability to infuse such life into a bygone time, and such excitement in a mere four-day period. The characters, even the minor side ones, are full of such life and complexity, and the scenes she paints makes medieval England feel very real and present. Another solid mystery with a dramatic and thrilling conclusion, and a strong lady hero to root for.

St. Peter's Fair's plot centers on the opportunities for espionage, clandestine meetings, mischief, and evil a fair attended by merchants and tradesman from England and Flanders can bring. This mystery has a higher body count than many of the Cadfael mysteries. Peters' plot includes the obligatory love at first sight (though this is with a bit of a twist). The mystery is fine, but the villain becomes obvious long before Cadfael figures it out.
