The fourth in Ellis Peters’ mystery cycle set in 12th century England. A merchant at an annual fair is murdered and a monk, Brother Cadfael, from the abbey hosting the fair discovers the culprit. There is intrigue aplenty but I wish the resolution had had a clearer explanation of the motive. Nonetheless these books are fun to read, and I enjoy immersing in a less frenetic rhythm of life than we know today. Miss Peters is meticulously accurate about the historical references she weaves into her stories, lending a fine degree of authenticity.

3.5 - 3.75. I am truly enjoying the Cadfael mysteries, and especially the monks of Shrewsbury Abbey and citizens of the town. What a comfortable, captivating world! To date each book has been stronger than the one previous, so I am eager to begin book 5 of the series. While it took no time to guess the malefactor in this tale, that didn't detract from the story - it just didn't matter that I knew the villain involved, as the story had such intriguing, beloved characters, historical references, and politics of that time period woven throughout. I am a fan of the author's voice; Peters' style easily pulls me into the world of Cadfael. Fun!

A solid book in the series, but not my fave. That's the next one, The Leper of St. Giles. She really does understand human nature. Her characters and the motivations are so true to life.

Benedictine Abbey Fair in 1139 in Shrewsbury, England near Wales. The setting is a turbulent time with hostilities between King Stephen and the would be Empress Maud. Brother Cadfael is needed to sort out the murder of a wealthy merchant and other subsequent misdeeds. The sheriff takes in the merchant ‘s lovely daughter for the duration of the Fair. Always a good read.

Ok, that was a good one. Suspenseful climax, and some nice moral and theological musings from Cadfael.
