This novel kept me thinking throughout. The connections and time travel drove the characters and story. 89

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

YAY! I finally read Malice. Honestly, once I started to pick it up.. I just knew that I couldn't put it back down. No matter what.

In it, you will meet Alice. Now she seems to be the only real normal person at this STEM school for geniuses but that's because she kind of is. She only really got into the school because they thought she would be just like her older brother Archie. Turns out, she's a genius with a camera and can take pretty awesome photos.

Besides that, she is also the harry potter of this world. She's going to save everyone from some evil person called the Virus Maker. Of course, she has no idea who it actually is right now because the virus isn't a thing yet. No, it wont come out into the world killing millions and millions of people until the future.

Sounds familiar right?

Well, unlike what is happening in the world, Alice has a chance to fix everything before it even happens. At first the clues were kind of annoying because "older" Alice wasn't very helpful. Eventually we get to find out who the virus maker really is and at that point - I had no idea how things were going to play out.

Overall, definitely enjoyed this book.

Hey book lovers! I'm here with a book review for Malice by Pintip Dunn which I read for the Dragons and Tea Bookclub on Goodreads. It was a weird experience to read this with the Covid 19 pandemic happening. I would like to point out that the book club leaders chose this in December, well before knowing anything about Covid 19. If you don't like the idea of reading a book about a virus right now, then I would suggest to wait a bit before checking this one out. The Dragons and Tea book club is run by Meltotheany, Amy, Romie, and Maëlys

"Hope must be strongest when hope appears lost."

PLOT
The plot was rather slow, to begin with, but about half-way through the book, it got really intense and fast-paced and threw a whole lot of plot twists in my way. I loved the increased pace as it conveyed the sense of urgency that had been missing from the first half of the story and I like the way in which time-travel was explored in this book. Sure, some parts were pretty far-fetched and unbelievable but somehow it ended up working for me.

CHARACTERS
Honestly, I never really connected with any of the characters, except for maybe the Older Alice and Archie. To me, Alice felt a bit naive and infuriating. The way she talked and acted got under my skin, at least for the first half of the story. I loved Archie from the very beginning, he is such a cutie and I want to hug him and make his world better.

I really enjoyed the aspects of time travel in this book, but the way the characters dealt with The Maker was exasperating. He really should've been seeing a therapist the whole time, in my opinion.

What if you were visited by your future self and were told that you were the only person that could save the world? In order to save your future self and your future soulmate you had to do the one thing that could hopefully alter timelines and save everyone? Not necessarily something a 16-year-old girl wants on her conscience. I whipped through this book. Stayed up late. This should be 4 1/2 stars. I just couldn’t put it down... it had me on the edge of my seat. The writing was great, Alice wasn’t a whiny teenager. She was set on a pass that she was determined to change no matter what the outcome. Half romance, half science fiction? Doesn’t matter. It was amazing!!

Easy read, definitely hard to take seriously at times towards the beginning, also a bit predictable, but I enjoyed it.
