Miller beautifully unpacks another myth into a work that carries you on a journey with the character. Although the story is short, I was captured by it and felt empathetic for Galatea.

If I see a myth written by Madeline Miller, you know I’m getting my hands on it.

“Galatea” is bite sized short story inspired by the original “Pygmalion” which can be found in Ovid’s “Metamorphosis”. The story of Galatea is about a sculptor who falls in love with his own art who he considers the most beautiful woman in his own eyes. After a goddess blesses the sculptor by bringing this marble statue to life, Galatea now exists to serve him as his wife. Her obsessive husband, however, keeps her locked away under the constant supervision of doctors and nurses, but Galatea is determined to break free.

Madeline Miller knows how to rework these myths and make them entirely her own. I loved her own interpretation and perspective on this story, and also enjoyed reading her thoughts after finishing the tale.

"Because I used to be made of stone"

[Rating actualizado post relectura.]

"Galatea" is a retelling of Pygmalion, the story of a sculptor who falls in love with his work and brings it to life.

This version has more layers. Pygmalion could not find a perfect wife, so he decided to sculpt her and by the will of Venus, she became human.

While the myth revolves around the male vision of the beautiful and perfect wife, this story turns it around and focuses on Galatea, achieving a much more interesting look that shows us the characters with all their miseries.

It's only 20 pages and it conveys a lot. It's a highly recommended reading although it is necessary to take into account the warnings.

TW: sexual assault, toxic relationship, suicide.

A brilliant retelling of an old tale, but it also serves as a critique of the ancient writings that are laden with patriarchal values and misogyny. The story of a woman and her fight to survive and escape her possessive husband. A short and engaging story which manages to make you attached to Galatea within the very brief time we spend with her. Bittersweet and upsetting commentary on the disease of misogyny.
