Such a fun read! Its the story of four young black women navigating dating, mental health, family issues, and friendship, as well as keeping their tresses maintained and gorgeous. Its beautiful to see black women support one another and have fun. Its nice to see us portrayed as happy and carefree. No arguing. No baby-dady drama. No comparing each other. No racism. No violence. I loved the panel where they are on the subway and the white people aren't happy about them laughing and talking, but the only other black woman was perfectly comfortable and had no problem with them there. Its a lovely read and something that lift you up and makes you feel proud all around to be a black woman. Also, very sex positive and queer-affirming. Perfect for ages 16 and up.

Wash Day Diaries follows the daily lives of a group of best friends, Kim, Tanisha, Davene, and Cookie. The first four vignettes are dedicated to a character, while the last is for the group. In them, readers get a glimpse into their haircare routines and hair woes, as they tackle the ebb and flow of life's uncertainties. Luckily, they have the support of each other to confront and take charge.

The content of Wash Day Diaries was very relatable. I felt seen and uplifted. The friendship group and its bond emitted an aura of found family. Embedding social commentary and conversations between them, centered around the hair, is reminiscent of "salon chair therapy" to me.

If you are in the mood for an informative, reflective, and fast-paced read, I implore you to please pick up this book.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ——— ‪i felt like i was hangin’ with my homegirls when i was reading this! i loved how they touched on mental health specifically. ‬it’s not talked about as much as we need in the black community. i laughed so many times and just felt so connected to these characters. i hope the authors continue this as a series.

I LOVED the characters and their friendships. This book also speaks about a bunch of different topics without being overwhelming.
As a therapist, my only critique is that I wish antidepressants were not immediately dismissed in Davene’s storyline, though I think the way Cookie came around later was helpful.

Oh how I loved this! It is very much a character driven, slice of life kind of graphic novel and I am here for that. The art and the way color was used throughout was beautiful, and I appreciated that there were sections that didn't have any words at all. It just focused on the characters and the various ways that they take care of their hair.

In a way, it reminded me of an adult version of the middle grade graphic novel [book:Frizzy|59251234] that also came out this year (and I also highly recommend!). In addition to being an ode to Black hair, it's also a story about love, friendship, and support. The four main characters are all there for each other, and they show up in multiple ways. It's a wonderful book, and I hope more people read it!
