4 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy YA fantasy.
Evie has just returned from a summer away at a mental health facility, where she unlearned the dangerous things that her "crazy" grandmother taught her. She returns to school to find that a new bridge built in their area means that some of the Cajun population will be joining her class, including the mysterious Jack Deveaux. When the voices in her head cease to go away, and the apocalypse comes, she and her mother must survive on their own. Evie soon learns that her blood can grow plants, which helps them to make ends meet. When Jack shows up at her plantation, he warns them of an army on the move planning to overtake the plantation and put Evie and her mother into slavery, where most women have ended up post-apocalypse. Evie leaves with Jack to try to escape the army and try to get to her grandmother. She might be the only one who can tell Evie what is happening, why she is hearing voices, and what she needs to do to survive.
I didn't know anything about this going in, which is how I prefer to start books. I thought that the way the author blended so many things together (teen angst, fantasy elements, post apocalyptic elements, etc.) was really seamless. It would have been easy to be super overwhelmed by the amount of things going on, but it all worked for me. Despite Cole's reputation for writing super steamy books, this one felt like YA to me (which it is). I wondered if it would be more like NA, but it was fairly tame overall. We'll see how the next books go, after all our heroine is just 16. I liked the idea behind the tarot cards and the teens being the major arcana characters. I liked the glimpse into Acadian/Cajun culture, and thought that Jack had his swoony moments... but he is also very possessive, kind of mean, and gave me whip lash a lot. I get that this is literally the end of the world and people are bound to be intense and hard on each other for mistakes... but I had a hard time love, loving him... and their relationship, which makes me wonder if they're endgame. We'll see!
Right After Reading:
This book was very compelling. I didn't know much going in to it, which I always think is better. I liked the Louisiana setting, and the peek at Cajun culture. I felt like there was a lot going on in this book, but it worked well together. I'm excited to see where the next book takes the plot!

Reread- final book finally comes out after 5 years in April.
It was fun doing the audio book, knowing how what happens but it has been 5 years I for sure forgot some parts.
Evie is annoying as all heck at points. Jack is so hot and cold.
I really like how the prologue starts then comes back at the end.

I would like it more if jack wasn’t so ridiculous!
But I really love the concept of it, definitely want to read book 2!

This book has been on my list of books to read for years. Literally.
And like all the other unread books on my shelf right now, I had a feeling I'd love it, but I just had a list to get through first.
I started Poison Princess and then proceeded to read it as quickly as possibly. Before I was through half of the book, I ordered the next two on Amazon.
It took me exactly two paragraphs to realize that this was a jewel. Evie is a character that has depth and made me love her. She absolutely is the kind of protagonist that I can read about for another four books or more.
Evie is extremely popular and well-loved but not everyone knows her. They don't know that she's been having visions and was sent away to get help for them over the summer. Not even her boyfriend, who she professes to love. But these visions are all just a part of the bigger picture. A picture that the reader gets to see little-by-little as the story progresses.
Enter Jack. Oh, Jack, oh, Jack.
Here's the thing; Jack is kind of an ass. A Cajun, handsome, sarcastic, ass. But, he's also kind of dreamy. And, whether he'll admit it or not, there's no denying he holds a torch for Evie. Assness aside, Jack is an incredibly strong character that is an onion. An onion? This boy has layers. And with each layer that is peeled back I fell in love with him more and more.
Poison Princess takes the reader on a very original ride. Part dystopian, part fantasy, part paranormal, with a heaping of combustible romance...
I can't wait to finish this series and see what happens to, not only Evie and Jack, but the other incredibly satisfying characters that we meet along this journey.

4.5 Stars!
This was such a fabulous read. It kept me guessing and on my toes. The world building was fantastic and I loved how original the plot was. The only reason this was not a 5 star read for me was because the pacing was slower than I would have liked. All in all a great read. I'm excited to see where the next book will take us.

I really liked this book. I loved how the author used the tarot cards. It's very original and a different take on dystopia genre. I would recommend this book to anyone.
I am truly undecided about this book. I loved it and I didn't want to put it down! But, I also just don't know what else to say other than...What a freaking KILLER ending!!! I cannot wait to read the sequel!!!
