This was one of the best books I've read so far. I loved how Cole managed to interweave everything, since there was so much going on. I was nervous because this was a post apocalyptic book that was also paranormal, which is not something you come across often. The author did a great job of explaining everything and making it all come together. Poison Princess was so interesting and I cannot wait for the rest of the series. Usually I don't like starting a series before all the books come out but I feel like this is the one exception!
adventurous dark emotional funny mysterious sad tense medium-paced

Now I'm someone with more than a passing knowledge of the Tarot, rusty knowledge but it's there, so this should have been right up my alley, nope, didn't work for me. It wasn't terrible, but I just didn't give a damn about the characters or the situation. After a catastrophe that ends with many people in a pile of ash and surface water gone, the world is full of water thirsty zombies, militia and no order. Evangeline 'Evie' Greene has survived but the visions she had before weren't psychosis, they were true, and she's still having more.

I didn't care, I don't care and this is a series I won't be continuing.

Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

This book would have been better if it cut out the first 70 pages. It had the one thing I hated in YA tropes, it's where a person instantly had control over their abilities after showing no signs of aptitude to do so prior.

The characters were a drag for the most of the book.

The main character was poorly written. How is it the character thought she was crazy for most of her life but not make mental health more of a priority in the book. It was talked about it was not used in a way that I would imagine a girl who sees visions and hear voices would interact with people on a regular basis.

Still I gave this three stars because the concept was interesting enough and unique.

3/5 stars

Whoa. This was 369 pages of WOW. I don't know where to start. Wait, I do... I'll just recommend this to EV. ER. Y. ONE. I know.

The first chapter is absolutely delicious. It is full of chilling intrigue that sucked me in and threatened to not let go. Unfortunately, the first chapter has practically nothing to do with the rest of the story. In comparison, a large chunk of the rest of the novel is a let down.

Excluding the first chapter so that it doesn't outclass the rest of the story, the novel is decent enough. Not great, but decent. The love interest, Jackson, is grating. Between the massive chip on his shoulder, his inferiority complex, and his downright vitriolic personality I had a lot of trouble believing so many ladies were throwing themselves at him as if he were the embodiment of male perfection. That said, I do appreciate the fact he was (seriously) flawed - I just would have preferred those flaws being reacted to a bit more realistically. My other major complaint is that the story, at times, feels like the author tried to include "everything but the kitchen sink." At the beginning, the story has strong elements of horror fantasy. As it progresses we're treated not only to that in the form of tarot based magic, but also to zombies, cannibals, post-apocalyptic dystopian theme, and general teenage shenanigans.

What I did like, is that the author definitely has talent as is evident by the first chapter. The overall concept is an interesting one and the author has a particular talent for weaving delightfully enticing sentences when she wants to. The pacing of the story had a lot of variance, which I found that it kind of worked for me. So all in all, this earned 3 stars from me. The novel was entertaining enough but I can't help that feel like some early promises were never delivered.

I was surprised how delighted I was with this book. I've read one other book by Kresley Cole (Shadow's Claim) and wasn't too impressed with it. Shadow's Claim kept me from reading any other Kresley Cole books. I'm glad I said WTH and cracked this one open.

Kresley Cole did an excellent job combining end of the world scenario and Tarot cards. Great imagination and well executed.

Uh, very disappointed. I HATED the writing style, HATED the characters (yes, ALL OF THEM), and HATED the storyline. Nothing can be worse than this. The only thing that makes me give 1 star instead of 0 is the authentic and very creative idea of the story. Tarot cards, Empress, Death, WOW! Just wow. I don't think I've read any books about that. I really really want to know what will happen next because the ending was such a cliffhanger, but I don't know if I'll read the next book because I feel nothing for the characters. They just annoy me to death. Evie is so hard to like because she's so naive, selfish and bitchy. I hate her. Especially when she freaks out EVERYTIME her claws come out, and it really gets into my nerves everytime she treats Jack SO unfairly. Dude, she's the bitch, Jack is just being nice to her, why can't she do the same????? And I never understood Jack either. Why would he want to protect Evie? How did his feelings develop? Why does he has to be so mean and nice at the same time? I don't know, I don't think he's not swoon-worthy at all and that horrible accent of him just made me want to puke--just so disturbing, sorry. And I have no sympathy for Matthew either. I thought he's younger than 16 but nevermind. He's weird, and he never answers Evie's questions, that's just a turn down for me. And Evie never forces Matthew to answer, yet she wants to know if Jack and Selena ARE together though she admitted to herself that she feels nothing for jack. I just can't understand her curiosity issues. I don't know, I tried liking this book but I couldn't. But look at the bright side, at least I succeeded in finishing the whole book so no one can blame me for "not giving the book a chance."

tbh in the beginning it was slow paced & you'd want to punch evie in the face. but the book explores character development of evie & the guy, not naming names haha. & plot twists are in the air okie ya. can't wait for book 2!
