The love interest sucked, to keep it simple. The crazy was lovely. Matthew stole my heart but Finn will always make me smile. My, I liked it but the author has a peculiar idea of romance I don't agree with (the boy was seriously a total jackass, and it's NOT OKAY to forgive people just because they're pretty and taking care of you. HE EVEN SAID HE JUST WANTED TO---ugh. Whatever), which ultimately twisted Evie into some dying swan chick. She had more spunk at the start than the time she spent with Jack. I adored the creepiness and was disappointed with all the stuff the author wasted time in--do her best friend and her boyfriend even matter ultimately? No. It was good but not excellent. I liked the narration, even if I didn't always like Evie, so... three stars (Jackson, ugh), and let's hope everyone grows up a bit (a lot) for the next one.
PD: I HATE that anger-is-the-answer crap. Frankly, Jackson freaked me out way more than Evie. Yeah.

Review from my personal blog.
This week is Kresley Cole week. Obviously this is the second book I've read by Kresley Cole ever. I'm hooked and can't wait to read her other series, but Poison Princess is a great entry into the post apocalyptic young adult books. Though I will say that you have to go in not expecting it to be 100% post apocalyptic.

We follow Evie's journey before the apocalypse and after the flash occurs. As far as a plot device goes the flash was a great way to have the world be destroyed and felt new and interesting to me all the water on the planet disappears and so do crops. The world falls apart very quickly, but there are a few the Arcana who are supposed to battle it out in this apocalypse. Though the apocalypse stuff doesn't really start until maybe 30% into the book.
The things I liked about this book is numerous. I loved the storyline I was hooked as soon as the flash happened. Evie felt like a real 16 year old girl not some weird contrived version of a 16 year old. The romance is at the perfect spot for a YA book as well. The cajun speak felt pretty authentic and not jammed in there as well. I personally kept imagining Jack as a kind of Gambit and also written as an authentic teenage boy. I felt like I was right along with Evie figuring out what was going on with the Arcana and more. The ending of the book is a great pay off as well but of course I can't wait for book two.

I only really disliked a few things about this book. I was put off at first by how much of it wasn't in the world after the flash. I kept wishing that part of the plot would be over, but felt less that way once I saw how it tied into the later plot.

Overall I give Poison Princess 4/5 stars and highly recommend if you like apocalyptic future stories. The story in this one is a lot more refreshing and different than other ones I've read. Well worth the cash to pick up this one.

Really really realllllyyy good book. This is Kresley Cole at her best. In short it’s like the hunger games but with classic fantasy and apocalyptic themes. It’s one of my favorites that I reread every few years.

There are some trigger warnings in here, pretty much everything you could imagine. The only thing YA about this book is the age of the characters. My only negative is that I wish that it was classed as an adult book, 12-18 year olds really have no business reading some of the stuff that is mentioned.

Had lots of potential, but from the 3/4 point I was just reading to get it over with. Main character took waaaaay too long to find her backbone...ending fell flat.

Oh my goodness... Loved this book. I couldn't put it down and I was always wondering what was going to happen next. I enjoyed all the characters, they each brought something to the table. The last 50 pages had me so engrossed and waiting in anticipation to find out how it was going to end. When it did end, I had to sit back and take a little time to think about things, and then re-read the last chapter. So, so good!

This is my first Kresley Cole book and it won't be the last. She does a great job of playing out the storyline and keeps the reader guessing which way the story will turn. Now I just have to wait for the rest of the series to come out... Hurry up!

Take a look at my Polyvore set inspired by the book.

I have mixed feelings on this. I really enjoyed the end and how it gives you a taste of what's in store for Evie and company. I really didn't care for the descriptions of everything Evie was wearing and what color ribbon and so on. And Jack... I can't even begin to describe my mixed feelings there.

I have to admit that I was wary of this book after the first few chapters. There were a lot of parallels to Twilight that had me a little skeptical. The heroine, Evie, is the popular girl at school who just returned from a summer at a psychiatric hospital and is ready for her first day back to school. A new bridge across the bayou brings a group of motorcycle riding, smoking, drinking, criminal looking Cajuns from the other side of the bayou to enroll in her school. One of the Cajuns is Jack Deveaux, who glowers at Evie every chance he gets and constantly picks fights with her preppy boyfriend. They even get paired together for a history project. You can see why I was worried.

The world building is what really drew me in to this story (after the prologue of high school drama). Twenty-two teens are reincarnations of the Tarot's Major Arcana, with their own powers and their own agendas. There's a lot left undiscovered about the Arcana in this book, but there's some very interesting set-up and I was so excited about it I jumped immediately into the next book.

In anticipation of the final book being released, I have decided to reread the arcana chronicles series, and boy was I missing this world. Its been 4 years since I last read this book, with the expectation the final book was set to be released the summer I started. However, the delayed release has gifted me a reread and I'm not mad.

This is my third time re reading this series and it still gets me hyped! This is one of my favourite book series of all time!

Twenty one kids are born with supernatural powers and destined to fight in a life or death game. Their powers are depicted on the major arcana cards of a tarot deck. They must defeat eachother, the last one to survive wins and normalcy to the world is restored… until next time

EDIT: fourth time re-read

This review is a little biased as I am writing it after reading this book multiple times, and naming this series my no.1 all time favourite book series!
The whole concept of the Arcana Chronicles is so unique and each character is either super loveable or super hateable, combined with great storytelling, an amazing plot with non stop action, a little romance and continuing growth in the characters this makes for an amazing read!

The first book to any series is always going to be about world building and introducing characters, so this is a little slow to start however all details are in there for a reason! I think the author perfectly sets up the series in a unique story telling way (switching POVs from Evie telling the story vs living the story) and continues to keep us on our toes throughout! I love this story so much for so many reasons I could type a 500 word essay, but for now please know for any reader just looking into this series, stick with it until book two, I promise it only gets better from here!
