A quiet masterpiece. Endlessly charming, funny, hopeful, sweet, and lightly sprinkled with those classic backman tragedies that rip your heart right out. Every character leaps off the page and most of them you end up wishing you could hug. If you liked the Bear Town series - this is another story that revolves around a small town obsessed with a sport that keeps it together and moving forward - but don’t skip it even if you don’t like sports. It’s not a sports story. It’s a human story.

So this is my third Fredrik Backman novel and I think that I have given 5⭐️ for all of them. The first book that I read was Bear Town and the second A Man Called Ove, and notwithstanding the fact that they are both written by the same author and set in the same country, you really wouldn’t think that they came from the same brain! Britt-Marie feels like the bridge between the other two books; it is written in the same easy reading, light-hearted style of Ove with a character who is a little bit different, but it takes the same landscape of Bear Town, as it is based in a dying town whose sole spirit is tied up in a sport.

But much like Backman’s other books, there is a wide range of fantastically written supporting characters; from the children, to the townspeople, to the poor woman at the employment office, and of course the rat. There are few authors that can create such a detailed and effortless cast of characters, particularly in a relatively short book.

Britt-Marie is such a lovely and complex character - I think that she has always known that she is a little bit different, and she was then scarred by the death of her sister and the knowledge that her parents wished it was her that died instead. And then to be married to a man for 40 years who took her for granted and had affairs, so when she finds herself alone and making her own decisions for the first time, she is struggling to navigate a world that doesn’t play by her rules. There are so many comedic moments which are balanced out by the painful ones, but much with Ove, this is definitely a book that I will re-read in the future!

My first Frederick Blackman book and Britt-Marie is a doozy to start off with. Super particular and quite annoying at times, I did love following her on her journey of late life self discovery. The story felt a little like Kicking and Screaming but a British, more put together version. The ending had me frustrated and almost lowkey rage quitting the book if it weren't for the last chapter.

I truly can’t get enough of Fredrick Backman. He’s certainly my favorite author of the moment, maybe all time.

This story proves that you can find yourself, your power and your community at any age in any location. Double points for girl power, folks overcoming adversity, and the beautiful game of soccer!!!
