I love a classic “murder mystery” piece of literature.

This is the kind of book that loses about 80% of its appeal when you know what the twist is. It's well written, don't get me wrong, but knowing what the ✨big reveal✨ is really ruins the suspense.

I also find the writing style very lackluster. It's not necessarily this book's fault, because it was so popular in this period, but being told the story after the fact instead of following along with the protagonist is a much less engaging way of reading for me. Wouldn't it have been more thrilling to read from Dr. Jekyll as he's transforming into Mr. Hyde than to hear it told from an outside perspective? I'm also really not fond of the "deformity as a visual representation of villainy" trope, but this was published in 1886.

Read for uni.

Did I read this wrong???

This is such a three star book, HOWEVER. The line "If he be Mr. Hyde, I shall be Mr. Seek" elevates it to a four star read easilyyyyyyyy. I screamed when I saw it, I didn't think Robert Louis had the guts to put a line like that in there, but I read it with my own two eyes. I just wish I read this book when it first came out so I wouldn't have already known the plot twist. Like I went into this book knowing that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were the same person but these 1880s girlies didn't know that!! Oooo I bet they were shaken to their very cores I'm so jealous.

I remember having this book read to me in elementary school. My teacher would read on and I remember watching the computer sleeping screen that traveled along a maze. One of those 90s screen savers. That's what the story looks like, still.

It's really interesting to finally read a story where the twist has been revealed to us since childhood. I can see the Victorians freaking out, though.
