The rhyme scheme is extremely inconsistent and hard to follow, which was already a deal-breaker for storytime, but the ending guaranteed that I wouldn't use this. Even though this is a fun and creative book for pirate-loving kids, the twist ending of
Spoilerthe parents turning into pirates could scare sensitive children, both because of the alarming illustration and the frightening idea of your parents turning into something they're not
. Even though I liked this book a lot more than some of the options I read, I would only share it with an individual child that I thought would like it, not a large group of multiple ages and unknown backgrounds.

Also, even though people have praised this book for being diverse, the Asian pirates are depicted in an extremely stereotypical ways, while characters of other races are not.

This was great fun as an audiobook with Neil Gaiman reading his own book about pirates who come to babysit. He was absolutely  brilliant at the pirate voices, even continuing into the outro of the book crediting everyone who’d been involved in the production of the audiobook. As far as I know this is sold separately to the picture book, which going by the cover looks fantastic! I think it would be amazing  if the publisher got a package together of the picture book with the audiobook. I remember we had some books and tapes when my son was a toddler (Commotion in the Ocean and Rumble in the Jungle) and we had great fun looking at the book whilst listening to the story, we can even remember some of the rhymes today!

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Bloomsbury UK audio for my digital copy via the NetGalley app.

When Mom & Dad go out for the evening a pirate sitter cooks up a jolly good adventure for two youngsters. Rhyming text and detailed illustrations add to the fun.

Illustrations are the best thing. Story's okay, rhyme's not great. I have to admit this falls pretty squarely in the "mediocre children's book" category, but it's not unpleasant.
