DNF’ed after a couple chapters. I just couldn’t anymore. This author’s wild claims based on anecdotal evidence and personal experience made frustratingly little sense as he used them to confirm his own ideas. He calls universities “ecosystems of intellectual garbage” - I think enough said there. He also contradicts himself multiple times - for instance, he argues against binary black/white either/or right/wrong categories, yet makes multiple snarky comments about gender identity and students’ pronouns - so the gender binary is the only binary we should ascribe to?
Additionally, he seems to think that science and “fact” can be separated from the subjective experiences and feelings actually lived by different people, as he claims that scientists are prohibited from pursuing some scientific questions due to fear of being called racist or sexist. As a woman in science myself and a future physician, these claims are horseshit, for lack of a better word. Just look at the pseudoscientific studies published throughout history that have been previously used to marginalize racial and ethnic minorities as well as women. We like to believe that science is black and white, but truly, it is an ever-changing field that is consistently taking into account new evidence and information - AND it is subject to researchers’ biases. We do a lot to try to minimize bias in science, but alas, we are human, and we cannot escape it.
The author consistently fails to acknowledge his own privilege and makes frequent sexist and racist claims. There are numerous examples of this, but I will just mention one here: the author discussing people’s “overreaction” to the election of Donald Trump in 2016, claiming it was ridiculous to say that marginalized people would be endangered. Years later, we can make multiple observations on how the election of Trump did, in fact, result in the endangering of marginalized peoples as well as women - for instance, the overturning of Roe v Wade (which has disproportionately harmed marginalized individuals) and Affirmative Action after Trump was able to appoint three Supreme Court Justices, as well as the emboldening of conservative politicians across the country to propose and enact wild numbers of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Saad’s claims are dangerous and frightening, all in the name of “anti-wokeness” and so-called “free speech.” The title of this book drew me in, but I had no idea what I was in for.

Man, I wanted to like this book.
I just can’t even take it seriously. Wants to talk about how people need to be able to have open discussion but calls everyone he doesn’t agree with a lunatic. No one will listen to you if you’re an asshole ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In today’s world, where common sense and reason are quickly disappearing, this book demonstrates the perils if we continue along this path. This is a useful “mind vaccine” for the “woke virus”.
I really enjoyed this book. I don't agree with everything Dr. Saad says in it but that is the beauty, and the whole point, of the book. It's ok to question things, it's ok to have different opinions.
I found the writing in the book to be very good, didn't lose interest at all. Easy to follow with his examples. Definitely worth the read.
