I couldn’t get into this one unfortunately.
The first section of this book (Roots) are fantastic. They are some of the loveliest 150 pages I've ever read, and I'd be more than content to reread them repeatedly. They are captivating, perfect little short stories, and I wish the book has ended there, and had it this would undoubtedly be a five star review.
The remaining 350 pages took me months to slog through, and nothing hit my heart or held my attention as much as that first, wonderful section. A powerful work for sure, but one that found its message early and then refused to stop hitting you with it. After a few hundred pages it began to feel like being bludgeoned with a blunt object. There are lovely bits in the latter chapters, but none that require 350 additional pages.
Do yourself a favor and stop after Roots and save yourself the trouble.

I can see why people rave about this book. It's written in a way I have never read before. But for me, it was the kind of story that I was confused and uninterested in until the last 30 pages when all of the pieces came together. The ending was great, yes, but does that mean I want to endure a 470 page journey of obscure, seemingly unrelated narratives to get there? No.
Prior to this, I was the type to vow to always finish a book once I've gotten 100 or so pages into it. After this, I'm abandoning that approach.

For me, this book was too slow and not engaging (or developed) enough to be character driven. I can see why it won the Pulitzer; the descriptions of nature are beautiful, but for me, quite long winded. I found myself not paying attention and having to reread pages, page after page.
