This is a hard one to rate. It takes a while to build up into something that I can appreciate fully, with the first half being just kind of okay. But then the second half really makes up for it (mainly dealing with the aftermath of a big turning point). It was poignant, brutal, and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone. I feel like I've been punched in the gut several times after reading the last 50 pages or so. Oof.

Trauma porn through and through. Emotionally scarring stories just for the sake of it. I fear the whole appeal of this book lies in the stickiness of the animal feelings of shock and sadness. The vignettes are not handled with care. The book feels like a response to the prompt of how much tragedy can be fit into the lifespan of a tree. Ass.
