Could've been great, but the protag is mad mid
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book as much as I wanted to. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it, despite being 80% of the way through. The intimidatingly large paragraphs, jumbled story and weak narrative made this one hard to sit through, and I didn't care about any of the characters at all. Maybe I should have seen this coming, as I'm not one for sci-fi or stories involving time travel - unless they can be truly unique. However, this one didn't do it for me, sadly.

Certainly an interesting read and very quick to get through. I found it difficult to look past the aged writing full of dated references, copious exclamation marks, etc. The characters weren’t very fleshed out and it wasn’t the most engaging story. That said, considering the time it was written, the plot was quite profound and unique. It’s a very impactful piece of science fiction literature and I can see how this would have influenced many authors and creatives for years to come. I’m glad to have read it.

My second read of this, as the first was a very long time ago (I was probably only about 10 years old so I was interested to see how it held up against my memory and finally give it a rating).
Pretty much just as good as I remember; and totally revolutionary in terms of modern sci fi. I love the creepiness, the floral descriptions and verbose writing style, the philosophical takes. Most of all I love the imagination that bleeds through.
The pacing is definitely a bit off for me and the plot could definitely be more complex/dive deeper into such interesting topics and themes. And the convenient supply of matches is one of the parts I find most unbelievable lol.
A quick and easy read which has had enormous cultural influence and I don't regret revisiting at all.
