I don't have much to say except WOW. Okay I'm done!..................................................

You're still here? Guess you want more? Okay but really. This was a great book. The cover said something about how the book was full of heart, they just don't beat anymore and I thought, well that sounds stupid. How can a zombie novel have heart? So I put the book off over and over thinking the book would be stupid despite the raving reviews. Besides, I don't even like zombies. I don't even see the appeal. That would never actually happen so whatever. Nonetheless, I (begrudgingly) started the book. The first few chapters made me want to put it down. It took me a while to read it, although it was only like 15 or so pages. I didn't really want to like the book. I didn't like the young age of the main character and I couldn't relate to him for some reason. Probably because I never liked trading cards, but still he seemed too juvenile for me to read. Then, everything changed.

I cant really explain this book. All I can really say is you should read it. That statement about it being full of heart? It is!!! It makes so much sense now. I loved it. It was still hard to relate to the young-ish boy but after a bit it didn't matter. I still loved it. I'll stop here because If I continue my review is going to sound more and more ignorant because my brain cant effectively come up with words for the feelings that I feel about this book. I give it 4.5 stars and I will be buying the next book in the series. It was a pleasant surprise

The zombies were great. The fetishizing of Japanese culture wasn't.

A very good zombie-apocalypse read. The boy version of Forest of Hands and Teeth, but filled with stronger, more well-developed characters. The relationship between the main character Benny and his brother Tom puts this above and beyond normal zombie fare. And unlike the Forest of Hands and Teeth series, the main characters aren't in love with death!

I was kind of let down by this book. I thought it would be better.

Loved it! Once I read it I was instantly hooked and was off on my search for the next one!

I cried.

This was much more character driven than I was expecting, and it was so heartfelt. I loved how the Imura brothers were allowed to show they loved and cared about each other. Such great character growth.

If you're going into this novel expecting the focus to be all gore, violence, and bad-a zombie slaying, then you might want to skip (though there IS all of those things). It's more focused on its themes and characters.

Content warning for some ableist language throughout the story.

This novel was an amazing opener into the series, i’m not sure even where to start, the setting and cast of this story is so well drawn and developed, the writing is so visual and immersive, the general beginning plot and setting for the first in the series was needed but the book absolutely shined when they left town and on adventure. The religious, mythological and cultural themes touched on and used makes it a great read and the author structures and flows the narrative leaving you feining like a zombie for more

As a whole, I think that this book was extremely well written and detailed and I did enjoy reading it. I love how everything comes full circle in the end while also leaving room for mystery for the next book in the series (which I can't wait to read); however, I think the biggest thing for me about the book was that it was very hard for me to get into into it. Like I wanted to know what was gonna happen next, but not in such a deep and pulling way like I typically like to feel when reading a book. I personally found most of the characters unlikable, including the main character, which contributed to it a lot, but I also think that it was really important for them to be painfully ignorant and annoying for the plot points and twists. Once again, it is very well written and the likability of the characters is very fitting for the plot; however I like to feel very deeply for the characters that I read about and I just wasn't able to form that connection until the end of the story. Either way, it's a great book and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series
