Ages 12+ (grade 6) (murder and dead zombies)

It has been taking me waaaaaaaaaaaaay too long to finish books lately. Maybe it's all the knitting? Maybe it's that The Walking Dead on AMC is much better more interesting than this book? Who knows.

Every zombie book I encounter suffers in comparison to World War Z/The Forest of Hands and Teeth/The Enemy/something else, it is true.

Promised my friend (who recommended it to me) that I would read at least 50 pages, so I did. And I hated it. It was badly written, and I was just so bored. Nothing happened, and I'm not a fan of slow-paced books. I could not make myself care about any of the characters at all.

I expected to read this rolling my eyes the whole time - I don’t really read many zombie stories - and boy, was I wrong! It has its issues - particularly the bad portrayals of women - but overall I really enjoyed this. Will probably pick up #2.

Didn't feel as engaged with the characters as much as I would have liked. Tom was a bit too "zen", Ben was a bit unlikeable and Nix was... I dunno... I just didn't really care.

"Zombies are people too" was an interesting take on things, but how do you reclaim places without killing zombies? Where are you going to herd them to while retaking the land?

In any case, if / when there is a zombie epidemic, these would be the kind of zombies I'd like to have - not those crazy 28 Days Later ones... I know I'd definitely wouldn't stand a chance against those (Rule #1: Cardio, which I have none of).

It's been a while since I've read this series but it's definitely my favorite zombie book. It has the perfect mix of action and emotion that I need in a book like this. The characters are amazing especially Tom. This series as a whole is pretty good but definitely goes downhill for me a little bit after the third book.

This adventure through a post-apocalyptic Zombie wasteland had me hooked from the first line:

"Benny Imura couldn't hold a job, so he took to killing."

Benny learns the trade of bounty hunting in the lawless Rot & Ruin from his older brother, Tom. The evolution of their relationship was one of my favorite things about this novel, along with the fast pace and action-packed chapters. There's a few things I could have done without, such as Tom's infallibility and the whole zombies aren't the bad guys cliche. Overall though this looks like it's shaping up to be a solid series and I can't wait to read the next one!

It's taken me awhile to get to this one, and I've shows up more than fashionably late to the party, but what a great read. It hit all the notes, big and small, and those notes are continuing to resonate.

I was really surprised by this book. I picked it up to be a fun and mindless read, but I thought it brought up some really interesting ideas about dealing with fear and what it means to be human. I'm very happy this book turned out so well.
