I read a review which pretty much started with words “No one rapes Mary or sexually abuses her.” Dark, but so is the book, and it took a burden off my shoulders to know I wouldn’t have to deal with that.
Reading about wreckers was interesting, and combined with the harsh wind of the moors, smell of the sea and the closeness of Christmas, it all reminded me of stories I’ve heard about wreckers in Finland. Grim work, with no honour. So it was described in the book too.
I got increasingly frustrated by Mary’s internalised misogyny as the book went on, but at the same time it provided an interesting lens through which she pondered on her relationship with Jem. Not a big fan of it still, though.

Just plowed through this bad boy and loved it. So dark and creepy and mysterious! Even if there were never actually wreckers off the coast of Cornwall, it's still thrilling to imagine it.
