I'm a fan of this author anyway, with Rebecca being one of my favourite novels. This story is actually written at a much faster pace than Rebecca and has stronger gothic conventions, the opening even echoing Dracula as the main character crosses the moors with rain and wind pelting the carriage she rides in. It's hard not to love a gothic tale of secrets, smugglers and murder.
Dark. moody, romantic, thriller, suspenseful but kind of a weak ending no spoilers but I was disappointed nonetheless the rest of the book made up for it.
I thought this book read very modern despite the time that has passed since publication. It was very engrossing and creepily atmospheric. TBH It's almost a 5 stars except I wish it had ended differently.

Decided to read Jamaica Inn since I loved Rebecca so much. They have very different vibes but I still enjoyed this one nontheless. I gave it 4 stars because it was a bit slow to get into but really picked up in the last third of the book and actually got very juicy!
If you want a mysterious tale of smugglers, murder, secrets and strong female protagonists then this is the one for you.
