This, regrettably too brief story, masterfully entwines violent fantasy with tragic reality.

Welcome to Day 2 of my 2021 25 Days of Short Stories Christmas Advent Calendar. Each day I will be reading a short story from the collection of over 600 short stories and novellas available for free on Tor.com. This is a collection of horror, sci-fi and fantasy. I will be letting fate (and the random number generator decide what I read each day.
Day 1: [b:The Art of Space Travel|30532462|The Art of Space Travel|Nina Allan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1558040356l/30532462._SY75_.jpg|50826910] by [a:Nina Allan|2881070|Nina Allan|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]
Day 2: These Deathless Bones by Cassandra Khaw
[a:Gregory Maguire|7025|Gregory Maguire|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1319068553p2/7025.jpg] has made it common to see fairytales from the viewpoint of the "villain." This is not a "reimagining" of any famous fairytale I am aware of but is instead a story from the viewpoint of an Evil Stepmom and Witch Queen. I'm not a huge fan of fantasy, but this story was just sinister enough to keep my attention. And you have to hand it to tor.com, they really know how to do a book cover.
