There were moments I really loved, but most of the time I wasn’t super engaged.

This book had me feeling so existential on the train, looking at everyone around me thinking about the fact that everyone on this train will someday be dead, and then tearing up because everyone on this train will someday be dead. I love Gilda. I love Emily Austin and her books and I want more. Why is nobody talking about Gilda and her brother? I was so close to fully sobbing at their relationship but then I remembered that everyone on this train will someday be dead and I sucked the tears back in and looked out the window.

Can’t say this was a “fun, page turner of a novel“. The main character of the book is very depressed and takes a little accountability for any of her actions, the entire book, which makes for quite a depressing book to read and get through. I do think that the author did a good job depicting someone going through a mental health struggle and it really makes you think about the little support that people going through that have. The end of the book had some redeeming qualities when the Gilda apologizes to those, she has deceived and takes some accountability in her life and seems to have another chance at happiness.

Wow I love this book. Sad and hopeful, vulnerable and hilarious, dark and beautiful, macabre and relatable. Emily Austin, you will always be one of my favorites! Somehow, she says the quiet things out loud. It’s like all my intrusive thoughts or morose fixations found a home in this charming novel.
