Have you ever read passages that are so richly descriptive that you feel like you’re in the character’s head? This book is filled with those. There were so many laugh out loud descriptions that encapsulate the ironies of modern day life. Beyond the satire, the character development was immaculate. What started out as caricatures became people. Loved!

A very long book that I didn’t want to end. Masterfully written with beautiful, well-fleshed-out characters. How Nathan Hill connects all the stories—WOW. A true literary masterpiece.

I don’t even know what to say, I LOVED this book with every ounce of my soul.

Poignant and witty.
Heartbreaking and heartwarming.
Profoundly sad and beautifully hopeful.
And all with just the right sprinkle of humor.

It is so special and very long.

DID NOT FINISH: 25%

I actually didn't even hate the content of the stories but how on earth did this go on for 500+ more pages?? This had no business being 700 pages and badly needed editing, in my very unprofessional opinion. Unfortunately, like The Art of Gathering, this also suffered from being read in a time where we are watching democracy die, and I cannot justify reading about some sad man trying to spice up his marriage and fumble his way through getting a six-pack.

The main guy had a father who did fires in fields. The main lady had a mean father and had a house with bats.
It was long and kinda boring. They had a son and lived in Seattle. The placebo research parts were actually kinda fun to read. I do think about placebos now more than before I read this book.

This is a tricky one to rate. I reallyyyy struggled through the first 75%, but the last 25% was enjoyable, interesting, and moving. A good majority of this is basically about how much it sucks to be middle aged, and I recognize there’s more nuance to it than that, but my GOD. Can I say that the last quarter makes it worth it? Eh.
slow-paced
