This was longer than it needed to be and I was already aware of a lot of the research it presented, but I really liked it. The audiobook narrator was great and it made me laugh out loud a few times.

I've already brought up this book in multiple conversations because it's sort of about the power of the way we frame things. Placebos seem to work because of the story the patient is told. It's all in how you frame it. To paraphrase Hamlet, nothing is good or bad but the story you tell about it makes it so.

I did not know about the Flint Hills of Kansas, so that was cool to learn about. There's a metaphor there in the grass with such deep roots that you can burn it every year and it grows back stronger.

This book sort of felt like a collection of short stories about this one couple. Some of the stories were sooo compelling but most were boring to me, so it kinda felt like rollercoaster. The main couple was unlikeable imo and it did not make a good case for wanting to be married with kids. It also felt kinda black mirror ish at times too, which was cool bc I liked the more nonfiction ish chapters better.

There’s a lot of buzz around Wellness so I decided to check it out. I really enjoyed this novel that follows a heterosexual romantic relationship over the course of decades. How does the beginning of a romance inform the trajectory of a marriage, parenting, and all the travails of day to day life? How does a long term relationship transform from warmth and love into distance and disconnection?

Nathan Hill’s writing is poetic and his characters lovingly explored. He also captures the Gen X vibe of his protagonists beautifully. My main critique is the author’s penchant to drag out details, often taking pages and pages to describe history and background info. It was sometimes excruciating.

But overall, Wellness is a sharp, insightful portray of love and marriage and the characters truly feel complex and multi-dimensional. Definitely worth your while!
