Its really hard to describe this book.
One minute it makes you a sad and another you are laughing at the crazy ass deep dives it takes into Facebook.
It's essentially the story of Elizabeth and Jack, how they fall in love and then from there it goes hither and ditzer and every which way. It explores Jack's family and growing up and the heart breaking death of his sister. The part where he and his Dad reconnect and then are later at odds on Facebook is very well written and one of the most interesting parts of the whole story. There's a lot of sadness but also a lot of really relatable experiences. Like when Elizabeth is trying to raise their kid using scientific studies as her basis for parenting. And yet she's just as flustered and crazy ad the rest of us moms.

Nathan Hill has an incredible grasp on the human condition. This book was insightful, hilarious, brutally sad, completely captivating.

Really could have been edited down, but there are many beautiful passages, especially that intro. I still prefer the plot of his first book, but the characters here are wonderfully nuanced and detailed.
This book won’t be for everyone, as nothing ever is; but for me: Bravo!

Smart, brilliant, while much of the sarcasm and satire especially appeals to me as a person who just turned 50 years old. I relate to these characters and themes and much of my life is so cliche. Hope the author comes to town soon so I can hear more about his writing process. Also the marshmallow experiment was found to be a fraud and important in this story and glad the author came back to it by the end. American Gothic also plays a role! Hope my other friends read this too
The second half definitely bumped up the score. Wow. This is a story of stories, life, love, empathy, and change.
“You could choose to be certain, or you could choose to be alive. And the only thing she was certain of was this: that between ourselves and the world are a million stories, and if we don’t know which among them are true, we might as well try out those that are most humane, most generous, most beautiful, most loving.”
