Here's what I learned while listening to this audio book: I only like Guy Noir in very small doses. The last hour or so I mostly just half-listened and tried to figure out what I'd be listening to next.

I've got [b:Pontoon: A Novel of Lake Wobegon|589819|Pontoon A Novel of Lake Wobegon|Garrison Keillor|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327944283s/589819.jpg|1055423] which I grabbed from Audible, too. I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it much more since I'm a fan of Lake Wobegon stories.

Hilarious. Unexpectedly scatalogical. Even found myself reading it in Garrison Keillor's voice.

Funny. Fast. But I'm not sure it ended. I've never read or listened to Garrison Keillor before because he always seemed stodgy and boring, but this was great.

Alert! If you're thinking about reading this, don't. Listen to it. I was astounded to see that this had been published in book form along with the audio version. This material-- an extended version of a long-running radio bit about a hard-boiled detective-- pretty much requires the sound effects, music, and multiple actors to make it palatable. There are plenty of good one liners. Recommended for PHC fans.

I can't imaging having read this over listening to it. The power of Guy Noir is hearing it and that's a large value add here; hearing Garrison, Tim and Sue act out the story rather than Garrison just reading it.

However this long form story perhaps shows the value of getting Guy Noir in short segments on Prairie Home Companion. The story was stretched and it lacked a lot the one off humorous moments you get in the weekly show. The sex and body jokes were stretched quite thin and was too much filler than I preferred, but all in all it was still nice to get a little more of the radio atmosphere.

A good solid piece of noir pulp fluff with enough PHC jokes to keep the devotees among us interested. Not worth a second read but glad I had the experience. As usual, Keillor pegs his audience and plays them like a cheap violin.

After I read Lake Wobegon 1956 a few years ago, I decided to stop reading Keillor's books. For some reason I picked this one up. It was OK but I think I would have been better off sticking to my resolution. The plot seemed aimless and the humor sank to descriptions of sex or to scatalogical humor.

Great story that fizzles about 1/2 through. Worth finishing though. Excellent performance!

Really enjoyable novel by one of my generation's most iconic radio personalities. If you enjoy the Guy Noir segments on the show, you'll enjoy this quick read!

If you like the Guy Noir Sketches on A Prairie Home Companion, you'll enjoy this book. I do agree with other reviewers who say that the audio book is probably better, especially if it is Garrison Keillor and his crew doing the narration and dialogue.
