I loved the contestants, and I loved how they all had their own silent desperation. It connected them in a very elegant way.

I will say that it can be a bit daunting with so many to keep track of, but most only shine for a chapter and it really only focuses on only 4-5 of them.

This is a SLOW horror, mostly physiological as you and the contestants see these bad signs and fumble trying to figure out what is real and how they should react. They also try and justify their situation because they don’t want to admit they could be  in a danger, which was an interesting narrative I totally understood and thought was sorta fresh.

The bad guys have an interesting backstory, along with the situation, and it went in a way I was not expecting but was still pleasant.

Less people killing for sport and more occult sacrifice

WARNING! This book does have an open-ish ending. I was okay with it, but you might find it a bit abrupt.

I really enjoyed the premise of this book but it fell a bit flat in the writing for me. I really struggled to keep track of who was who, especially based on the authors descriptions. I also just didn't feel a lot of tension.

A very quick read, the characters are well-fleshed out and the lore of the world is quite interesting. Unfortunately, the pacing was inconsistent. The dread never really gets a chance to settle and once you hit about the middle of the book, there is no time to even feel the increasing pressure of the impending deadline.

“The Cabin in the Woods” but set it in an decrepit amusement park. That’s it, that’s the plot.

This was SO promising. A hide and seek competition with a potentially sinister backstory, 14 people in a hunger-games style competition to battle to the end for $50k? Set in a creepy, run down amusement park? Sign me up! Also, that cover! 😍

Unfortunately there are just too many characters and all of them lack depth, I couldn’t tell you anything interesting about ANYONE except for Mack, the most primary character, and even her backstory is muddy and doesn’t feel fully fleshed out. Honestly the best part was the ending, and the very last line in the book- “who fucking cares”

I ADORE Kiersten White's writing in this one. I love how she builds up suspense and fear without giving too much - that is until she gave too much in the end, which was a shame. I really liked the parts where it is insinuated that something isn't right; that something bad happened, but it's described in ways that still leaves something to the imagination, which makes it scarier. The characters were two dimensional but had enough substance in that slasher film kind of way. Substance enough to make me interested, but flat enough that they were type cast.
The flow of the book is smooth and fast. I think it had a good balance of giving us character stories and backgrounds without sacrificing the pace of the horror elements.
