Trigger warnings: death, animal death, death of a friend, death of a parent, gun violence, pandemic, violence
I tried reading this book during 2021, and with the lockdowns still happening in Melbourne at the time, it was waaaaaaay too much to deal with. And then I...somehow convinced myself that I hadn't liked this but not enough to give up on it entirely so it's been sitting on my bookshelf for OVER TWO YEARS untouched. So colour me surprised when I finally picked this up and absolutely devoured it.
Did it entirely make sense to me? No, not in the slightest. Did it remind me a lot of Station Eleven, as the blurb promised? Absolutely.
It was very very odd, but somehow it just WORKED.

This book is one of the only ones where I finished and then immediately began reading again. The ending shook me. I've cried over this book multiple times.
This was a really solid and enjoyable book. It's set in the near future where a fly-flu pandemic has wiped out most of the population.
I quite enjoyed the journey of Nico, and thought that the companions she meets up with along the way were really well drawn. Kit's storyline was excellent and I liked how "The Deliverer" kept popping up in small chapters.
The book raises some interesting questions and definitely got me thinking, especially with the last several chapters.
Now if only that fly buzzing around my house would just please please go away....

I went into this story super excited based on the cover and premise of the book. Sadly, I really didn't end up invested in the story until about halfway through and I found that so disappointing! With all the lovely reviews, I really have to wonder if I even read the same book as everyone else. That intriguing description gets lost within pages and pages of seemingly unnecessary content...the first bit of the story just drags on.
Kit's narration seemed very out-of-place, he's 12 and I think, meant to come off wise, but I found him terribly annoying. Nico's chapters were enjoyable, keeping me mildly interested to push through the story. The entirety of the novel should have been told from her view, especially considering the cover design choice...which is what drew me to the book initially.
It's apparently a great novel based on other reviewers and if you like post-apocalyptic YA, I'd recommend giving this one a read...it just wasn't meant for me.
Thank you, Viking Books via BookishFirst for the ARC to read and honestly review.

This book was recommended by a friend as a "trippy and violent post-apocalyptic time turner." I would agree. This book had killer insects, killer illness, killer people...but it also had immediate and diverse types of love, deep sorrow, a tense and delicate kind of hope, and slowly unfolding surprises.
