This book is incredibly powerful and important. Canada would be a much better place if everyone read and reflected on this text. Truly, a book I’ll never forget.

This book should be required reading for everyone who lives in Canada.

The first chunk of it is basic Canadian history about slavery, which is not taught in our schools. We teach the Underground Railroad and that's about it. The book goes on to discuss current Canadian policy, and I learned a lot. It laid things out really well to explain how we as a country got to where we are.

It's meticulously researched, but not boring to read. While it's primarily looking at anti-Black racism, it also addresses some Indigenous and LGBTQ+ issues as well, and where all those things intersect.

Read it.

This is that rare book that is both widely acclaimed yet somehow still underrated. A true tour de force.

I would feel weird rating this book in stars but that being said I would highly recommend you read it. I listened to the audio book over the course of the last three months and found myself so angry and heartbroken. I think this book should be required reading for all Canadians in school.

Every Canadian should read that book. If you think "at least we are not the US", you must read that book!

A book so holistic and well-researched that it is completely inarguable. I wish I could make everyone read this book - I wish it was compulsory reading in school curriculums. To read this book and not see that black and indigenous lives are systemically devalued and aggressively controlled is to deny truth, facts, and history. Never has it been more obvious that Canada is and has always been a white supremacist settler-colonial project, and that any gestures towards some vague sense of national character tied to multiculturalism is an intentional PR campaign. We live in a terrible place, and we have so much to fix, so much power to drag out of the hands of the ruling class; so much work to do. Not a fun read, but a necessary one for literally every Canadian.
