It is not a sin to read the classics translated. I think much of the value comes from seeing the nuance in all other literature. Through Ovid, I see the original Romeo and Juliet (Pyramus and Thisbe). I see the structure of Canterbury Tales.
This is more layered than the Greek classics. With the space to insult the gods. The space to look back on the Greeks with criticism.
The more ancient literature I read, the more of the bible I see as a rip-off or ripped-off. In this work the flood that floods the world kills everyone but Deucalion & Pyrrhia.
The parts I liked best of this were the personifications of Rumour, Envy, and Sleep. The passage about Narcissus is also strangely beautiful: "he is the seeker and the sought, the longed-for and the one who longs, he is the arsonist -- and is the scorched"
New Vocabulary:
-anile
-crepuscular
-clishmaclaver
-furbelow
-hypnagogic
-soporific
-quinquennial
-apotheosis

It's hard to even begin to review this book, but it is an essential read for all English majors, if for no other reason than to understand mythological allusions in later texts. However, it's wonderful on it's own. It's episodic in nature, so you can read a few and then put it down for months (er, guilty), however, when you do pick it up, you don't want to put it down. I'm going to miss carrying this around everywhere with me.

Four years of struggling to finish this book. The stories were pretty compelling and sparked an interest in me that resulted in my personal college essay. I annotated the entire thing and I'm pretty proud of myself for keeping with it cause I wanted to give up and just read the book like a normal person. ovid has a way with words, and it was nice reading some stories that I had already read in Greek and Latin. made it more fun for me. The book was very slow and very dense but again interesting and fun.
