Its amazing that Ovid is still read so many years after it was written. Comments such as, '...if it is bitumen that blazes up... then surely when, in the long course of time, earth's stocks are exhausted, she will no longer afford a rich abundance of fuel for the flames', and, 'If there be any truth in poets' prophecies, I [Ovid] shall live to all eternity, immortalised by fame', seem prophetic.

As well as being prophetic, it's beautifully written. Each story blends into the next without jarring or even breaking the narrative. The reader is taken from the Creation to the Roman Empire without even noticing the shifting of time or place.

i love it when books are riddled with political context but i do hate romans for re-adapting greek mythology names (especially ulysses)

Ovid is, as with all things, occasionally beautiful and occasionally unremarkable. I think this book is very valuable as a source for understanding how our stories get told and untold and changed and morphed (pun intended). I’d recommend reading just a few myths - Echo and Narcissus, the Death of Orpheus, and anything involving Hecuba are some of the best.
