die sprache hat mich gekilled, genauso wie die römischen götternamen. trotzdem ein wunderschönes buch über die liebe und das leben, und über verwandlungen

Some bizarre crap happening here, even if it’s a veiled poke at the Roman Empire & Augustus. For example, wife’s sister is abducted, raped, and tongue cut out by husband. Wife finds out. Wife kills and mutilates their son and feeds him to husband/father for revenge.

this was absolutely incredible. the poetry was rich (although i found this translations rhyme somewhat limiting) it was still beautiful.
the metamorphosis not only through individuals but through the gods to the humans, to ovids current rome.
the transformation of god to man and then musing on legacy. i loved the stories orpheus, ceyx and alycone, prosperine, ceres, daphne and apollo, medea and venus particularly. we are all motivated by love abstracted are we not? is love not what transforms us all?

The translator made some choices here

I have intense feelings about Ovid and the way he gives agency to the sexual assault victims and how so many retellings claim to be more feminist than he was but end up being sexist as anything. He had his flaws! Any woman in power is the Worst apparently. But it’s beautifully written and we should be able to appreciate that, along with nuanced portrayals of gods like Athena, despite how dark it can be.

I really enjoyed this, it was a little difficult to get into at first but it was completely worth it. I particularly enjoyed Pygmalion and the ivory statue. I loved the whole idea of how everything changes nothing stays in its original form!!
