So, so good! Epic adventure, heart-wrenching drama, faces old and new, and no shortage of dramatic twists. The writing and art are fantastic, and this team delivers time and time again.

Every other review I've written have been about Lemire's writing, so let me take this opportunity to recognize Nguyen's incredible art that ranks among my favourites of his work, if not the best he's ever done.
It doesn't really stand on its own and relies a bit too much on Descender, without quite being Descender either. It's sort of ok. Just waiting for the *inevitable* to happen I guess...

Confused and a bit incoherent. But somewhere hiding in this, there does seem to be an interesting story. I appreciate the backstories. There is a definitely a richness here, and many threads to pull on. But a bit too many threads being pulled at once. And I still prefer the previous sf story to this fantasy story. But I'm curious as to what happens next.
2023 review:
I've wondered if this series could be read independently. I think this book has its own central character and it's own antagonist both of whom have fleshed out back stories. As a standalone volume 2 in the series, I give it four stars. As a continuation of Descender 5 out of 5.
