Mixing magicians and vampires? - Strange, but I loved it!

Cruel Illusions fascinatingly mixes Vampires and Magicians. While the book at its core has the typical YA formula, Fuston put enough of her spin on it to make it feel fresh and a fun reading experience.

Fueling your magic by performing in front of an audience is such a cool concept, and I loved the connection between Magicians and Vampires.

I LOATH love triangles, and while this technically has one, it didn’t bother me?

Reads like a hunger games-meets-twilight fan-fic. An entertaining story but I could not get myself to like or relate to the main character and I didn't find myself caring much for the love interest because I didn't understand why he just immediately liked her so much. I wouldn't recommend reading this if you're over the age of 13.

Fun story, new take on vampires. Probably make a decent movie.

Ava's world was shattered when a vampire took her mum’s life. Now, she's a foster kid with a mission - revenge. But with no vampires in sight for a decade, she's losing hope.

Until one day, she stumbles onto a secret magic show run by an ancient magical society that offers her a chance to learn. But there's a catch - she must prove herself in a dangerous competition where reality is as elusive as the vampires she hunts.

This book starts off pretty intense, more than I thought it would. It talks about vampires and hunters in a way that's a bit hard to believe. The idea of living forever because of a wristband seems weird and makes the magic system in this book seem like it could be full of holes.

This is a young adult book with a lot of romance, so there's a love triangle that you can see coming from a mile away. It’s not a bad thing, though. If you like that kind of thing, then you’ll really enjoy this book.

The only thing is the romance seems to take away some of the main character's personality. She starts off sassy and full of depth, but she loses some of that as the book goes on.

I did like that the book made you think about some moral questions throughout. I honestly wasn’t expecting that. It's not as simple or surface-level as it seems.

All in all, it's a fun read and a good pick if you're looking for something light and entertaining to take your mind off things.

This was a very well written, world built story. I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happened next

The start was promising, but the plot was obvious, the love triangle was annoying and overdone, and the stakes for the deaths never felt real. Ava was bleh, Roman and Xander both felt generic, and none of the friendships seemed solid like it’s been a few weeks I never felt like they actually care about each other. Also Ava training to kill vampires by watching movies was so cringey

The ideas for the vampire vs magic vs blood stuff and the horror blood garden were actually really cool, but would have been a better fit in an adult/horror novel instead of trapped in the silly love triangle.
