I had higher hopes for this book. I feel like the book let itself down. The end (to me) seemed anticlimactic, and an abandonment of the attempt at a scientific approach to our relationship with the chemicals in plants which act upon us in various ways.
An easy enough read, and there is some interesting information contained therein.
BUT - reader beware that the last third of this book contains a white man’s foray into plants which are heavily entrenched in indigenous cultures and I don’t know if he sufficiently understood his outsider status, and I think dipped well within the realms of cultural appropriation. He seems aware that he is potentially borrowing the trappings of another culture but I don’t think he really respected it enough. It kind of felt like “I know this is kind of cultural appropriation but I really WANT to try this drug so it’s ok if I try it.”

I didn’t realize this was gonna be a book about this man journaling his experience with drugs.

Like cool you want to grow opium I guess? Cool you went to a mescaline ceremony? I thought I was gonna learn about the chemical interactions and actual impact on the brain and why these psychedelics do what they do.
